Moving is stressful, and as REALTORs we see all the common mistakes. After helping so many clients make the transition to their new home however, we have gained invaluable insight in where things go wrong, and how you can make moving to your new property a complete breeze.
Top 10 Tips For Moving
1) Pack Over Time!
Skip the stress of stuffing boxes in the chaos of moving day. Start packing a few weeks in advance with the stuff you won’t miss for a week.
2) Label Every Box: What’s Inside, Where’s It Going
This is another big step a lot of people skip or only half do, and it will save you hassle every step along the way. When you label boxes not only with what is inside, but which room it will be moved to, this simplifies what order boxes go into the truck (heavy items and living room first in, last out; kitchen and bedroom last in, first out).
3) Stop Grocery Shopping 1 Week Prior To Moving
Try to eat through all the stuff in your fridge right now. You don’t want to deal with off food if the move takes longer than anticipated, and it’s a great opportunity to start fresh!
4) Consider Hiring Help (Friend or Moving Company)
If you are like me, you see the value in using a moving company. Even if you are on the fence just call a few companies, get some quotes and decide for yourself whether piece of mind and a lot less stress is worth the quoted price. If you are getting friends to help out, consider bribing with pizza and first dibs on any furniture that you are discarding/selling.
5) Get Sturdy Boxes
Go around to your local stores and just ask the merchandiser’s who are typically happy to get rid of a few boxes! Pro tip: wine stores stock very sturdy boxes as do electronics stores.
6) Don’t Pack Your Closet
Ask your moving company to bring wardrobe boxes (some include this for free). Save yourself a lot of ironing, and if you are not using a moving company just pull a garbage bag from below your clothes on the rack and tighten the bag near the hanger – voila! Easy to move, easy to put on the new hangers.
7) Contact Utilities and Cable Company In Advance!
Depending on what neighborhood you live in, you might have a Seinfeld-esque conundrum awaiting you. Call your cable company early, find out the waits in your area, and book it for the day you move in. That way you aren’t spending a whole day just waiting for the cable guy to show up.
8) Don’t Forget to Forward Your Mail
Forward your mail 1 week before moving. That way if anything slips through the change of address in the first week you will still be there to receive them.
9) Stay Calm, Keep Your Eye On The Prize
It is very easy to get irritated, and this can really put pressure on relationships/friendships! You don’t want to move just so you break up or split from your roommate next week and have to move again. Chill out, high five at every opportunity, and try to keep it light.
10) Mandatory Spa/Sauna Day
You’re all moved in and sweat is dripping from your brows.. Reward your hard work with a trip to a spa or the local pool for a hot tub session and unwind. You made it!
